What it´s all about...
Journalist and photographer Stefan Gewecke from Germany and girlfriend Nadège Duhautoy from France were travelling and working in Southamerica. We started on the 15.th of September 2009. The journey took about eight months, and you can follow it on this website.
We are back in Germany since the third of May 2010.
In the first month, we were working in the project "Pisco sin Fronteras" in Pisco, Peru, to help rebuilding houses that have been destroyed in an earthquake in 2007. This month was also good for acclimatizing to Southamerica.
After that, we travelled the Gringo-Trail from Nasca to Arequipa - Colca Canyon - Cusco - Machu Picchu - Lake Titicaca - La Paz, Bolivia. In the jungle close to Rurrenabaque, we worked as volunteers again, and kept on travelling from there to Uyuni, through the desert and pass the Saltlakes into Chile. From San Pedro, we took a 24-hour busride to Santiago, stayed there for two days and crossed the border to Argentinia. For four days, we stayed in Mendoza, and then moved on to a flat-share in Buenos Aires. We stayed in Buenos Aires for one month, to enjoy this big city, and to calm down a little bit.
After this month, we visited Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay, for one day and went on to Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay. From there we went to La Coronilla, on the coast of Uruguay. There, we worked in the Marine-Turtle-Project "Karumbé" for three weeks. After that we went back to Montevideo, to work on this blog. From Montevideo we took several buses to the Iguazu-Waterfalls in Argentina, then crossed the border into Paraguay and travelled across the country to the capital Asuncion. From Asuncion we took a long bus to Santa Cruz, Bolivia. After only three days in Santa Cruz, we spent three days in Samaipata and then went on to Sucre. We stayed for two weeks in Sucre and took spanishclasses at the Centro Cultural Bolivia-Aleman. From Sucre we went on to Potosí and visited the mines. After Posotsí we went on to Cochabamba, where we worked as volunteers again and lived in a family. From Cochabamba, we went to La Paz and Arequipa and from there to Pisco, where we had been volunteers in the beginning of our trip.
After two more weeks in Pisco we went to Lima. We could stay only about five days in Lima, because on the second of May, our plane took off to Germany.
We are now back in Germany, the journey has ended.
We want to go again, and will!
Along the way, we have met many, many nice, interesting, friendly and open-minded people, locals and other travellers. Each day has a new surprise on hand and the days are rare on which we don't gaze in awe about something, we didn't know or could never have imagined. Might it be the colour of a mountain, the wing of a butterfly, or the strange beauty of a friend's thought.

Best to you all,

Germany
10.05.2010 This is one week, that we are back in Germany. During the almost eight months, that we have been traveling Southamerica, it has not once been as cold as it is here, but we are still happy to be back. We could have kept on traveling, but the budget is at the end, and you always need some to restart, and it is nice to be back as well. Friends and family and... well, home!

Cochabamba
25.03. - 09.04.2010 We were ready to volunteer in Cochabamba. Being a volunteer, you never know what you get. The volunteering-organisation in Cochabamba Bolivia Volunteers gives you different possibilities to volunteer in. Nadège decided to go for "Art - Museum" and I was aiming at "Journalism". At our first visit to the places, the Museo Arqueologico U.M.S.S. and the newspaper La Voz, everything seemed fine.

Potosí - The town of silver and the TIO
21. - 25.03.10 We didn´t expect much, but liked Potosí a lot. The highest town in the world at 4090 meters altitude is quite an experience. We visited the mines, that have not changed in 300 years. In the 90s, there used to work about 20.000 people, now there are about 5.000. 25 die each year of sicknesses and accidents. A scary experience to crawl down into the mines and visit the TIO deep in the mountain!

Sweet Sucre
14.03.2010 The name "Sucre" would suggest, it has something to do with sugar. This is not the case but it sure is a sweet town! In 1538, Sucre was founded under the name Ciudad de la Plata de la Nueva Toledo by Pedro Anzures, Marqués de Campo Redondo. In 1839, after the city became the capital of Bolivia, it was renamed in honour of the revolutionary leader Antonio José de Sucre. In 1991, Sucre became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We can well understand why!
We are staying here for about two weeks, taking spanish-lessons at the "Instituto Bolivia-Alemán". The lessons are good, but expensive also.

Asuncion, Santa Cruz and Samaipata
10.03.2010 SUCRE. As I said before, we had a hard time in Asuncion. We were so happy, when we arrived safe and sound in Santa Cruz. From there we went to Samaipata, what a difference from Asuncion, and after some most relaxed and nice days there went on to Sucre, where we are now.

The Iguazu Waterfalls
24. - 25.02.2010 I finally get the chance to upload the pictures of the Iguazu Waterfalls because of a good internetconnection here in Sucre, Bolivia. It is about time, because the falls really are amazing, an absolute HIGHLIGHT of the journey. Powerful, mighty.

Earthquake in Chile - We are fine
Hi Guys. We have received quite a lot of e-mails, asking if we had problems with the earthquake in Chile also. NO! We, personally, didn´t. At the time of the earthquake, we were in Asuncion and we saw the news about the earthquake on TV. We were shocked, because we have seen Pisco, the town, that has been destroyed by an earthquake in 2007, and it is still majorly destroyed, and we have just made new friends with Chilenens in Karumbé. So we are worried about them. But WE ARE FINE.
Sweet Freedom
27.02. - 03.03.2010 After Karumbé we made a small stop at Montevideo to work on the blog. After that, we took off to the Iguazu Falls in Argentina. They are amazing! From the Iguazu Falls we wanted to go to Bolivia. For that, we had to pass through Paraguay. So we took a bus from the Iguazu Falls to the Ciudad Del Este in Paraguay. We sat in the bus and saw the office de migracion pass by on the outside. The bus didn´t stop, and nobody in the bus seemed to care, so we didn´t worry too much. This prooved wrong...

Yo soy un Chucho...!
19. february 2010
Yo soy un Chucho, una Tonida, un Agua Viva, un Tiburon. Yo soy un Lobo, una Tortuga, un Pez Espada, un Gabiotin! - I am a Stingray, a Dolphin, a Jellyfish, a Shark. I am a Seal, a Turtle, a Swordfish and a Seagull. Working at Karumbé, you learn to sing and dance and play this song by heart. It sticks in the head and is the biggest fun. See the eyes of grownups glitter like 12 years olds. We were not even supposed to come to Karumbé, but went as well, and fell in love. The work can be hard, we were tired in the evenings, but the surrounding, the work itself, the village La Coronilla and its people, and most of all the team with its neverending spirit for the turtles made this an awesome experience. We will always be "un Chucho"!
THANKS to the people of Karumbé for a the wonderful time! :)

Going back in history, Colonia and Montevideo
21.st of January 2010. After leaving Buenos Aires behind us, the journey picks up again on an other pace. "Tranquilo", latino-style, especially in Uruguay. We visit Colonia del Sacramento, one of the first portuguese settlements on the new continent, founded in 1680. The old part of Colonia takes you back in history with its cobblestone streets and old basilika.
Montevideo, the capital of "Republica Oriental del Uruguay" is with about one and a half million inhabitants a big city, but very charming in its tranquility. This town really shows two sides: The old colonial style and the new modern side, right next to each other.

Off we go, leaving Buenos Aires
20th. of January 2010. This is the last day in the flat-share in Buenos Aires. We leave this town tomorrow, leave BA and Argentina. It was a wonderful time of long nights, hot days, fantastic festivals and much sleeping-in.
We needed a break from travelling. We needed a break from changing hostels every second or third day, meeting new people and seeing stunning countryside. We needed a home. And we had it here with a well running internet, so I could watch the German news, telling me about blizzards in Europe, a hot shower every day, a refrigerator and a big supermarket around the corner.
This will all be gone by tomorrow, and that is good also. We are relaxed upto the point of boredom, the four kilos I have lost the months before are back on my hips and our brains are ready to take in new infos.
We are going to Colonia, Uruguay tomorrow, travel on to Montevideo and go north along the coast of Uruguay, where we will try to volunteer in a marine-center.
More news later!

Feliz Navidad y un buen Año Nuevo de Buenos Aires
Hola Amigos...
01.01.2010 It´s true. After three and a half months of working and travelling, we have reached the southernmost point of our journey, Buenos Aires. Well, as often have before, plans change, but so far we don´t think we will go further to the south than this. Chile and Argentinia are just too expensive and there are still so many things to do and places to be in Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador and other countries.
We have moved into a flatshare in Abasto. This is the shopping-area and Tangodistrict of Buenos Aires. There is Steffen here from Würzburg and Dagmar from close to Frankfurt / Main. Both are nice people, and both are well over 30, which makes talking a little nicer compared to a bunch of twens who only want to party, party, party. Well, it´s not that we don´t... The bad part is, though, that we don´t get to speak a lot of Spanish, it´s all in German.
Christmasmenu was Quiche Lorraine with Champagne, steaks with red wine, baked potatoes, salad and ice-cream for desert, and it was amazing. We went to mass in a beautiful church, even. For New Year, we visited friends from the UK, and went to a big international party afterwards.
You can now look at PICTURES of Buenos Aires, Christmas and New Year in FOTOS. There are two VIDEOS of the party in the streets on New Year in VIDEOS.

The most important news at first: We have arrived savely in Lima, Peru, our first destination.
